Question about parvo virus?
We had a puppy a few months ago and had to put him down at the end of November as we later found out he was from a puppy mill and was sold to us with parvo virus and a respiratory disease. The night we put him down we immediately came home and threw out all of his belongings, bleached the entire apartment including floors, carpets, walls, door handles, light switches, bathroom, kitchen, bedding and anything else the puppy touched. He was only in our apartment for one week before we had to put him down. It has been over two months since he was in our apartment. We have had our carpets and furniture steam cleaned at 150 degrees and have bleached the carpets with a 1:30 water/bleach solution multiple times (approximately 5-8 times). We brought a new puppy home on Friday night after consulting with many vets and our breeder and he seems to be doing really well. He has his first shot and he is being kept indoors only until he has all of his vaccines. I am still paranoid about him getting parvo virus even though I know we did absolutely everything and more we could possibly do to prevent it (according to the vets). Just wondering if anyone knows how long it would take to see any signs of parvo once the puppy comes in contact with it? I know I am probably over reacting but I am still very concerned. Also, we have a vet appointment for him tomorrow afternoon for a little check up and to meet our vet. Should we be requesting a parvo test just to be sure? Would anything show up if he has only been here for 4 days? Please advise – thank you!

Oh I’m so sorry. Please join in the fight against puppy mills, pet stores, and back-yard breeders! Anyways, I’m pretty sure that Parvo can only be transferred directly from puppy to puppy. It sounds like all the cleaning you did would get rid of it. ….. You could just talk to the vet about it and hear what he/she has to say. The puppy will look like he is getting a cold- lethargic, runny eyes, nose, messy ears, and all sorts of human flu symptoms. If you catch it early enough, there is a good chance the pup will survive.

The Parvo vaccine does not go into full effect for up to 10 days after the injection.
Regardless of getting Parvo vaccine’s, there is still a 10 percent chance a pup/dog can still become ill with Parvo.
Now with that said, the first puppy who was put down, obviously was exposed to Parvo prior to any vaccinations, if indeed the pup received any, so he/she would go down fast. So sorry you went through that.. Rotten Puppypimpers…grrr
Anyway, you’ve done all you can do, bleach is the only thing that will kill the virus.
Any clothing you didn’t wash that you may have worn when you had the original pup, wash it, and clean all shoes you wore at that time too. Just to be sure.
The pup will go down fast if it catches the virus, firstly, won’t eat, secondly, very sleepy, thirdly, throwing up, then that awful smelly bloody diahrea will start. The pup might be picky about his food for a few days due to his new surroundings, but if it goes longer than that, get to the vet, don’t wait for any other signs.
Parvo can take a year to dissipate,but you’ve done so much, I think you’re fairly safe.
